The CityPockets Team would like to wish you and your family a very happy new year!
But first, some parting words…
2011 has already come and gone. It was a tumultuous but exciting year for daily deals. We saw Groupon go public in November and saw Google Offers join in on the fray in May. We also saw giants such as Facebook deals and BuyWithMe fall. We’ve seen countless more enter and leave the market.
But if anything, 2011 was the year daily deals matured from an Internet fad to become a household name.
Congratulations to Groupon for going public in 2011!
In honor of the year, here are the 11 most popular daily deals from year 2011:
11. Google Offers – Overstock.com
-$10 for $20 toward jewelry, furniture, housewares, and more at Overstock.com
-$20 for $40 at Newegg.com toward computers, electronics, cameras and more
-$35 (Pay $15) to Spend on Mother’s Day Flowers & Gifts
-$25 for $50 (or $50 for $100) Worth of Clothing and Accessories Online or In-Store.
-$13 for One Booklet with Five Individual Big Mac Vouchers and Five Vouchers for Large Fries
-$7 for $15 Toward eBay Purchase
-$20 for $40 of Concert Cash Toward Tickets for Concerts in Individual Cities
-$10 for $20 Worth of Toys and Games, Books and More at Barnes & Noble
-$9 for 2 Movie Tickets
-$10 for $20 to Spend on Groceries
-$10 for $20 Amazon.com Gift Card
-January; 1,150,000 sold
LivingSocial took the cake in 2011 with its Amazon.com gift card deal. What kind of a year will 2012 be for the daily deals and what awesome new deals will we see? Leave us a comment with your thoughts on this past year!
See you next year!

Boxee Box is truly a dream come true — it seamlessly merges TV and Internet in ways that a non-cable TV paying TV viewer can only begin to imagine. Most everyone knows that Internet is a vast storage box that holds bunch of information that you can find almost anything including missed TV shows and movies.
Previously, it would take several tries to find the TV episode or movie you’re looking for and then you would find that the quality looks like it’s from the mid seventies. Enter Boxee Box. It finds your favorite TV shows and movies online and automatically plays it on your TV — and no subscription necessary! It’s free after purchase of the box. Genius!
Today CityPockets is proud to announce Felicia Moeis as the winner of our Holiday Facebook fan giveaway for Boxee Box. What she plans to do with her new Boxee Box:
“I’m now finally able to organize my entertainment in an exciting fashion instead of letting my poor DVR and the random online video links sit around and pile up all over the place!”
Very nice!! We’ll be doing another raffle in the new year. Be in the know by becoming a fan on our Facebook page here. Thanks everyone for participating!
If you’ve noticed that the CityPockets team has been MIA for the past week, it’s because we’ve been working hard down in South Beach at Mia(mi). In the past week, we managed to finish and push out a beta version of our new iPhone app, which is now available in the Apple App Store.
We have some very exciting new features added to our iPhone app:
1. Marketplace is upgraded to show all instant deals aggregated from popular sites including Scoutmob, Groupon Now, LivingSocial Instant, CityPockets secondary marketplace and more
2. Added Yelp Ratings to deals
3. Now connect your Foursquare account and get deal notifications when the venue you checked in has a deal
4. All new design with improved speed. The app received lots of facelift and beauty sleeps (CityPockets team, not so much)
You can still use our “Wallet” feature to keep track and retrieve all the vouchers you already have. Now use CityPockets to find deals you can purchase and take advantage of right now all on your phone! This is a must have app for all deal lovers.
As it is still in its beta release, we’d appreciate any and all of your thoughts at email@example.com. We want to hear any issue/ praise/ complaint/ question/ feedback from all of you! So please don’t hesitate to just stop by and say hello a quick thought or two anytime :)
As an added bonus, check out some pics of the CityPockets Team working away in Miami below!

For a Haitian woman, cooking over open fire is equivalent to smoking 2 packs of cigaretts a day. Unfortunately without stoves, millions of women are forced to suffer under these circumstances in order to make food. The consequences are tragic — the leading cause of death of children in developing countries is respiratory illness.
Today we announce the support of one of the most highly requested deal site: Google Offers.
We thought that the magnitude of the news appropriately required Mr. Tom Cruise’s comeback to our blog (for those who are counting, that’s the 3rd time). We heard you CityPocketeers clamoring for Google Offers to be supported and it is finally here. Log in to your account page to add.
Currently only gmail accounts are supported — but more coming very soon!
Which site should be added next? Leave a comment to let us know!

Ahhh Thanksgiving is nearing, and for many of us just looking at pictures of wild turkeys is starting to make our mouths water with anticipation…
(Would these fine birds normally make you hungry?)
But for many of us, this weekend represents so much more than just turkeys and wishbones — Thanksgiving is as often associated with its tempting food as it is with its delicious deals. We’re on the eve of the biggest shopping weekend of the year, and experienced shoppers everywhere are preparing appropriately (check out the close-to-reality Black Friday Walmart Commercial here).
Lucky for you, you use CityPockets to keep track of the best deals! Here is a helpful breakdown of where to look for the best deals on the planet this weekend:
For those unfamiliar, Black Friday is the Friday after Thanksgiving and is considered the biggest shopping day of the year. Fanatics line up days in advance in the hopes of getting blenders for $5 and laptops for $10.
For all things discounts, Slickdeals.net and Fatwallet.com are your go-to guides. These two discount forums both have dedicated sections for Black Friday shopping and focuses on online deals weeks before November even comes around. Be sure to read through the comments as many community members help contribute by adding new deals and voting up hottest deals on the web.
Don’t forget about the daily deal giants now. LivingSocial is supposed to have 20+ national deals beginning on Black Friday, and Groupon (albeit not offering Black Friday specific deals this year) will be offering “once in a lifetime” deals such as a $5,000 3-day trip on studio tour and taping of the Ellen DeGeneres Show.
Merchants are also jumping in on the fray to get as much traffic to their sites to gear up for the big weekend. eCommerce giants like Amazon and Walmart are already offering early Black Friday deals to keep shoppers engaged. Everything is first come first serve, so check out the sites soon!
Small Business Saturday
Small Business Saturday is the day after Black Friday and it’s dedicated to supporting small business around the country. It’s a noble cause to get consumers to support the mom & pop businesses that work so hard to provide all kinds of services around us. Be sure to pledge to be one of millions pledged to support them this Saturday: http://smallbusinesssaturday.com/.
Everyone’s got a local business they enjoy — if not, still the best ways to discover new local businesses to support are via reviews aggregators such as Yelp and CitySearch. Or maybe just take a walk down your street and see what you find — sometimes those turn out to be your favorites for many years to come!!
The hectic weekend closes with Cyber Monday, the Monday following Thanksgiving Weekend.
Cyber Monday is an electronic enthusiasts’ dream — deals are all online and it’s a cyber land grab to whatever users can add to their “carts” first. Online shopping this year is supposed to the highest it’s ever been; one thing is for certain — it’s sure to slow down your work servers. I’ve personally done years worth of Christmas shopping through Cyber Monday and will be re-freshing pages, clicking things left and right all day (shh…)
Best places to look for Cyber Monday include gadget specialty shops and longtime Cyber Monday participants Staples, Woot, and Newegg (also be sure to check the sites mentioned above).
With all that said, let’s not forget the Thanksgiving spirit and give thanks for deals and discounts :P. Happy eating!

Movember (the month formerly known as November) is responsible for raising awareness for men’s health, specifically prostate cancer and other forms of cancer for men. To raise awareness, men grow moustaches and don’t shave for the entire month of November. Talk about a tall order!
Our friends at Arbitrage.com, next generation menswear, created unique mustache accessories in support of the cause. And CityPockets is teaming up with Arbitrage to offer $5 off any Arbitrage Movember item accessories exclusively for CityPockets users (offer expires 12/7). Not only that, for every Movember item purchased by CityPockets members, Arbitrage will donate $5 to Movember!!
