CityPockets Acquires DealBurner

Dearest CityPocketeers,

Today, we’re thrilled to announce that we’ve officially acquired DealBurner, a text messaging service that serves up instantly redeemable daily deals to users who check in on Foursquare or Facebook Places. Founded by Jason Fertel, (formerly founder of freespeech) DealBurner aggregates all of the instant deal services—including Groupon Now, LivingSocial Instant, ScoutMob, Tenka—and voucher inventory from secondary daily deal marketplaces like CityPockets and Lifesta.

When we met Jason a couple of months ago, we realized that we shared the same ultimate vision: to allow people to get relevant deals – right when and where they want them – and to create the largest inventory of deals past, present and instant. The acquisition of DealBurner moves CityPockets further towards our ultimate goal of helping people get the most out of their daily deals, while expanding our deal inventory and moving the needle in our mobile strategy. This makes us the only place to buy, manage, resell and instantly redeem daily deals on the go.

We’re proud to announce that Jason will join CityPockets as Director of Engineering and can’t wait to see what new heights Jason can take CityPockets to. For now, DealBurner will remain a separate product of CityPockets and plans for integration will be announced soon. Current users will experience no interruption in service and new users will still be able to sign up for the service at

Recent Full-time Hires & Intern Contributions

This acquisition brings CityPockets to 5 full-time employees, with our most recent hire being Dan Fleming who recently joined us as an engineer and already making tremendous contributions front & back. He was previously a software engineer at iCIMS and just graduated from Stevens Institute of Technology in 2010. Earlier this summer, we brought on former PayPal Product Lead Jin Kim as our Director of Product and Design, and she’s working on some major new features that we’ll be launching in the Fall. We cannot be more excited and empowered with our rock solid team and what the future has to hold for us!

Among other new features, CityPockets recently launched our mobile apps for iPhone and Android and a “gifting” function, which allows users to send friends and family daily deal vouchers as a gift directly from the CityPockets platform. Our Android app was built in-house by 2 incredible Cornell undergraduate interns: Mike Mazzola & Kevin Qiu, in just 10 weeks (look out for Phase II of our app to be released very very shortly)! These boys are now dutifully back in Ithaca for school but will return to CityPockets in the winter to continue innovating with us.

This week, we also welcome our new Marketing & Social Media Intern, Min Kim, who hails from LA/Chicago and recently moved to New York to join the CityPockets team with much dedication and passion for the product. Welcome Min! Our “trojan man” Product & Superstar Intern, Andy Hong, who started with us back in June is a recent MBA grad from USC and former banker. We’re psyched to have both of them on the team!!

While we’re currently not hiring for any more full-time positions, we’re always looking for more awesome talent to join our team. So if you love CityPockets and want to help out (graphic design, css/html, guest blog, user tests & focus groups, product review, social media, promotions, whatever), we’d love to hear from you:
